Food and Drink - Surrey Three Peaks Challenge

Food and Drink on the Surrey Three Peaks

The 23-mile Surrey Three Peaks route will burn between 2,500 and 4,000 calories depending on your size and pace. Proper nutrition and hydration throughout the day will help you complete the challenge comfortably.

Before the Challenge

Have a good carbohydrate-rich meal the night before and eat breakfast two to three hours before starting. Porridge, toast, or eggs provide sustained energy without feeling too heavy.

During the Challenge

Hydration

Carry at least two litres of water and drink regularly throughout the day. Dehydration causes fatigue, headaches and poor concentration. In warm weather, you'll need more.

On our guided events, we provide water top-ups at checkpoints so you don't need to carry your full day's supply.

Food on the walk

Eat small amounts regularly rather than stopping for one large meal. Keep snacks easily accessible.

Good options include:

  • Quick energy: Bananas, dried fruit, flapjacks, cereal bars
  • Sustained energy: Nuts, trail mix, sandwiches
  • Savoury: Pork pies, sausage rolls, cheese

Refreshment Stops Along the Route

Box Hill

The National Trust Box Hill café at the summit serves hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals. There are also facilities at the Stepping Stones car park.

Holmbury Hill

No facilities on the hill itself. The village of Holmbury St Mary has the Royal Oak pub.

Leith Hill

The Leith Hill Tower café (National Trust) serves refreshments when open. Coldharbour village has the Plough Inn.

Along the Route

Dorking has supermarkets, cafés and pubs if you're passing through or finishing there.

After the Challenge

Rehydrate and eat a balanced meal with carbohydrates and protein to help your muscles recover. The pubs and restaurants in Dorking and the surrounding villages offer plenty of options for a well-earned celebration.
