National Three Peaks timing plan
The National Three Peaks Challenge is won or lost in transitions. A timing plan keeps the team aligned on pace, food, rest stops and driver responsibilities.
Overview
- Build a schedule that assumes steady walking, not best-case performance.
- Plan for food, toilets and kit adjustments between peaks.
- Assign roles: lead walker, sweep, and a dedicated driver team.
Template schedule (planning starting point)
Use this template as a planning structure. Exact times vary by season, weather, and your chosen routes.
| Stage | Goal | Planning notes |
|---|---|---|
| Briefing and final kit check | Start calm and organised | Finalise layers, head torches, food access and water. |
| Ben Nevis ascent and descent | Steady pace, controlled descent | Do not sprint early; protect quads for later descents. |
| Transition 1 (Nevis to Scafell) | Eat, hydrate, reset | Meal, foot care, dry layer changes, no long delays. |
| Scafell Pike ascent and descent | Keep moving efficiently | Navigation and terrain can slow teams; keep the group tight. |
| Transition 2 (Scafell to Snowdon) | Fuel and manage fatigue | Hot food if available; reduce decision fatigue by pre-packing. |
| Snowdon ascent and descent | Finish strong and safe | Expect limited signal; keep head torches accessible. |
Transitions: the highest leverage improvement
- Pre-pack food in peak-by-peak bags so you are not searching for items.
- Plan toilet stops explicitly.
- Have a single checklist used at both transitions (food, water, layers, feet, batteries).
Where teams lose time
- Overly ambitious early pace and long stops later.
- Foot issues ignored until they become disabling.
- Unplanned detours or slow navigation sections.
- Driver fatigue and slow handovers.
Drivers: non-negotiable safety
If your team is walking, they should not be driving between peaks. Plan dedicated drivers or consider a guided event where transport is included.
