Waterproofs for the Three Peaks Challenge
Waterproofs are a safety item, not an optional comfort upgrade. Wet clothing increases heat loss and reduces your ability to keep moving.
Why waterproofs matter
- Weather changes quickly on higher ground.
- Wind and rain increase fatigue and slow group pace.
- Staying dry helps you maintain temperature during rest stops.
Taped seams: what it means
A waterproof fabric alone is not enough. Stitching creates holes. Taped seams cover those stitch lines from the inside.
- Waterproof jacket: taped seams are essential.
- Waterproof trousers: taped seams are also essential.
- If you are unsure, check the inside of the garment for tape along seam lines.
Fit and layering
- Choose waterproofs that fit over your warm layer without restricting movement.
- Make sure the hood works with your head torch and can be tightened in wind.
- Test them while wearing your backpack so shoulder straps do not rub or pull.
Pre-event checks
- Test waterproofs in rain during training if possible.
- Pack them in an accessible part of your bag.
- Check zips and cuffs, and confirm the hood adjusts properly.
- Do not rely on a cheap emergency poncho as your primary waterproof layer.
