Emergency kit and what guides carry
Your emergency kit is about staying warm, visible and able to respond to small problems before they become bigger ones.
Principles
- Carry the basics, even if you hope not to use them.
- Keep critical items accessible so you do not need to unpack your whole bag.
- Test your head torch and pack spare batteries or a backup light.
Essentials to carry
- Head torch (and a backup light if you have one).
- Warm layer you can put on quickly at rest stops.
- Gloves and a hat/buff.
- Basic blister kit (plasters and tape).
- Fully charged phone (assume limited signal).
- Food you can eat while moving.
Keep it accessible
- Waterproofs: top of bag.
- Head torch: easy to reach.
- Snacks: a pocket or hip-belt pouch.
- Blister kit: a small pouch you can grab fast.
What guides carry (typical)
On guided events, leaders carry safety equipment for the group. The exact load varies by route and conditions. Your personal kit still matters: you should be self-sufficient for clothing, food and the items you need quickly.
Not a replacement for preparation
An emergency kit does not replace training, pacing, route planning or weather awareness. Use it as a safety net, not as a plan.
