Three Peaks for beginners: first-event guide
Beginners can complete a Three Peaks challenge with the right choice of route and a consistent training plan. The biggest risk is underestimating how long you will be on your feet.
Choose the right challenge first
- If your team is new to hill days, Surrey is the most approachable baseline.
- If your team can train for endurance and wants a single-location day, Yorkshire is a strong first "classic" option.
- Welsh is shorter but steeper; it often feels harder than Yorkshire for beginners.
Use: compare challenges.
Training checklist
- Follow an 8-12 week plan.
- Do at least one long hill day four to six weeks before your event.
- Practice steady pacing rather than speed.
Start here: 8-week plan or 12-week plan.
Kit checklist
- Boots you have already tested on long walks.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams.
- Warm layer and spare gloves.
- Head torch and spare power.
Use: kit list hub.
Pacing and stops
- Start slower than you think and aim for consistency.
- Eat and drink steadily from the first hour.
- Use short, repeatable stops rather than long breaks.
Use: pace calculator and pace targets.
Planning
- Download routes and keep offline backup access.
- Plan parking and meeting points.
- Use the Countryside Code and respect local communities.
