10 Tips for the Yorkshire Three Peaks
- Know the route. The classic circuit links all three peaks in a single loop. Familiarise yourself with the full route before the day rather than relying on signs alone.
- Start early. An early start gives you more daylight and reduces pressure later in the walk if conditions slow you down.
- Set a steady pace. The challenge is about consistency. Walking too fast between the first peaks often leads to fatigue on the final climb.
- Watch the weather. The Dales are exposed and conditions can change quickly. Wind and rain can make the route feel much harder than expected.
- Carry proper kit. Waterproofs, warm layers and a map are essential even on clear days. Do not assume good weather will last.
- Eat and drink regularly. Keep energy levels up with small snacks and frequent drinks rather than long stops.
- Look after your feet. The route includes a mix of stone pitching, grass and track. Well broken in boots and blister care make a big difference.
- Stick to paths. Use the established routes to protect the landscape and avoid unnecessary erosion.
- Be aware of time. Many people aim for a 12 hour completion, but it is not compulsory. Know when to slow down or shorten the day if needed.
- Finish responsibly. The final descent can feel deceptively easy. Stay focused until you are back at the start.
