A Pennine Journey
Wainwright's Personal Pilgrimage
A Pennine Journey retraces the 247-mile walk that Alfred Wainwright undertook in 1938, long before he became famous for his Lake District guidebooks. This deeply personal route loops through the Yorkshire Dales, Eden Valley, and North Pennines, reflecting the young Wainwright's growing love affair with northern landscapes.
Unlike his later Coast to Coast, this route remained unpublished until 1986 and retains a quieter, more contemplative character. The trail visits Swaledale, Wensleydale, and the high Pennine moors, offering walkers a chance to follow in the footsteps of Britain's most beloved hillwalking author.
